Kharkov - the largest scientific, cultural, industrial and transport centre of Ukraine, was the third in size industrial centre in the USSR after Moscow and Leningrad.

The basis of Kharkov concerns the middle of XVII century.

According to one facts, the city got name from the river Kharkov, to another — from legendary Cossack Kharko.

Until 1765 city was the centre of the Kharkov Cossack regiment, and after Cossacks disbandment becomes the centre of Slobodsky province. About two thousands people lived here then. The city was the military-defensive and industrial-agricultural centre. In XVII century the city became the centre of many fairs holding, and has gradually turned in trading-craft, and later in the factory centre. By 1837 in Kharkov were over seventy industrial enterprises: mills, distilling and tannery.

During XVIII—XIX centuries Kharkov becomes trading, cultural and industrial centre of Slobodsky Ukraine. In the middle of XIX century over 30 thousand inhabitants lived in the city.

In 1789 stationary theatre opens in Kharkov the first in Ukraine, in 1805 — the first in territory of Ukraine the Kharkov university, in 1885 — Polytechnic institute.

Kharkov is the university city of Ukraine. Most of the top universities are located here. Thousands of students annually come here to create the career of their future.

There are a lot of museums, theatres, libraries, marvelous churches of various religions, and sports establishments in Kharkov.

Kharkov is famous for the square of Freedom which is considered the biggest in Europe and second-largest in the world.

There are many nice parks in Kharkov. Next to freedom square is the largest one in Kharkov and across from the Opera house is the fountain for the City of Brides. If you kiss there it is supposed to bring good luck in your relationship. Kharkov is known as the city of brides.

Kharkiv is the Ukrainian spelling of the city name and Kharkov is the Russian spelling. Russian is the predominant language of the city of Kharkov but some Ukrainian is spoken.

Kharkov has a very diverse population from various countries of the former USSR. Kharkov was an important industrial city during the time of the USSR.

People are friendly also are always glad to help. You will find many Ukrainians speak a little English. They are always willing to talk to you so that they can practice their English. Many foreigners are afraid of travel to the countries of the former USSR. Ukraine is now a democracy and is in the process of trying to join the EU.

August is rather hot, but the rest of the year is quite nice and we have all four seasons. This is good in many ways because the lady that you are interested in lives in all forms of weather and adjustment will not be that big of a problem.

The state language - is Ukrainian. But practically on all territory of east Ukraine speak Russian, due to the heavy industrial complex that Kharkov was under the USSR times. There are many stories to be told about Russian language in Ukraine.

Again we will say, many Kharkov inhabitants have some knowledges of English, and will be glad to communicate with you and to help, if it will be necessary. They might even try to talk to you for hours to practice their English.

The majority of people practice Orthodox Christianity. In Kharkov you can see a lot of magnificent Orthodox churches and these contain many wonderful works of art dating back centuries.

All religious are practiced in Ukraine. It is a free society with no restrictions on religion.
